Green Mondays #16

#16.1 Something in the Way - What constrains green technology innovation, and what are some of the answers?
Paul Sands, General Manager Japan, Virgin Atlantic

Paul Sands is General Manager Japan for Virgin Atlantic and was one of the first speakers at Green Mondays last year, when he spoke about the airline's biofuel test flights.

Since then Paul has been engaged in postgrad research into the factors that influence innovation of green technology - what factors can block innovation or push it in a certain direction, and how can we encourage that direction to be towards sustainability?

Paul's presentation will cover some of his key findings, and what we can learn from Betamax videotapes, your computer keyboard, a plane that does not exist but should, steam powered cars, and golf carts.

Intrigued? Come along and find out how all this relates to green innovation.

#16.2 - Greenheart Project - Clean Power for Trade and Development

Patrick Utley, Project Director, Greenheart

Outline
Examine the concepts of Sustainable Development and Appropriate Technology through the lens of a specific project that's already underway and being organized here in Tokyo. In a deliberate effort to incorporate the latest concepts in social enterprise and environmental responsibility, Greenheart is integrating the engineering of a new type of ship with the social and business models for deploying it for maximum positive effect.
Patrick Utley, the director of the project, will explain its motives and methods, report on the progress to date and the long-term goals. In the spirit of wiki, the audience is invited to critique Greenheart assumptions and strategies, collaborate with new ideas, and otherwise contribute during the following Q & A.

For a preview of the Greenheart Project, www.greenheartproject.org.

Bio
Patrick Utley has a history of adventure travel, sailing, radio production, and development, among other pursuits. He presently runs a language school in Tokyo and climbs trees in his spare time.
