Event Information

UNU Global Seminars are designed to enhance awareness among university students and young professionals about issues of global concern.

While East Asia has clearly benefited from globalization, the region still suffers from legacies of the cold war and has yet to forge a viable regional community. Participants in the 2009 UNU Global Seminar – Shonan Session will explore the impacts and challenges of globalization for East Asia and review the initiatives taken by individual countries and regional and global organizations. The programme will consist of lectures by distinguished experts from Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and Australia, and discussion and exchange among participants and lecturers.

The Shonan Session will open on Monday, 31 August, with keynote lectures at UNU Headquarters by William Tow, Professor, Australian National University, and Kinhide Mushakoji, Director of the Center for Asia Pacific Partnership, Osaka University of Economics and Law.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend. For more information, contact Naoko Yano, UNU Office of Communications (tel.: 03-5467-1311; e-mail: media@unu.edu). Information for Applicants

Applications are now being accepted for the 25th annual UNU Global Seminar – Shonan Session. The session is open to students enrolled in a Japanese university (undergraduate or graduate level) and young professionals residing in Japan. The deadline for applications is Friday, 29 May 2009.

Participants must understand both English and Japanese, as lectures may be delivered in either language, without interpretation.

Approximately 100 applicants will be selected to participate. A participation fee of ¥40,000 covers meals, accommodation and seminar documentation. Foreign students who do not receive a monthly scholarship of more than ¥134, 000 for their studies may apply for a 75 per cent waiver of the participation fee.

The seminar will open with keynote lectures (see above) on 31 August. On 1 through 3 September, seminar participants will attend lecture/discussion sessions on “Major Political and Economic Issues in the Region”, “Obstacles and New Initiatives for Regional Cooperation” and “Towards a Shared Identity in East Asia” as well as a special session on “Case Studies of Local Efforts”. The seminar will conclude on Friday, 4 September, with group presentations, a closing ceremony and a farewell lunch.
